Who are Copyright Laws Protecting?

For my remix week mediation I made a SoundCloud post where I was planning to use a song from Howls Moving Castle only to learn I wasn’t able to upload the remix due to copyright as it contained a snippet from a song featured in the movie. I wasn’t going to make any money off of this, somewhat only promoting the movie and the artists involved.

Big companies have the power and money to have systems implemented which allow, for example, videos to be deleted instantly if they are uploaded with any of their music, images etc. Yes, in theory copyright is a good system. Although, might only be benefitting big corporations and not smaller artists, musicians etc.

In 2015 a couple lost their wedding video as it was uploaded to YouTube with a song by Taylor Swift. Similar to my example, the couple were not going to make any money off of the video, essentially Taylor Swift would have gained promotion from this video.

This raises the question, are copyright laws there for everyones benefit or somewhat damaging creative practices of smaller, individual content creators and everyday individuals?
